There are many methods of on-the-job training. Some of these are:
- Job shadowing - This is where a person observes another person performing a job.
- Mentoring - This is a process in which an experienced worker helps train an inexperienced worker in the skills and knowledge necessary for that job.
- Self-learning - Self-learning is when someone trains themselves on a topic or skill without any help from others.
There are two types of on-the-job training. The first type is informal on-the-job training. This is when the trainee learns from their colleagues by observing and listening to what they do. The second type of on-the-job training is formal, which takes place in a structured program. There are three main methods for formal, structured on-the-job training: apprenticeship, mentoring, and teaching.
